I'm firmly convinced there are only two ways out of this

And both require completely blowing up the current system.

Option 1 - take health care fully capitalistic. The consumer is 100% responsible for all bills the same way they would be for getting their car fixed. Allow health insurance to be purchased privately (NOT employer provided), but it would only be used for catastrophic conditions, not day-to-day health care. Let competition and a HUGE decrease in paperwork drive costs down to reasonable levels. Eventually that will get a simple ER visit for some stitches down to a couple hundred bucks instead of tens of thousands. Save insurance claims for things like cancer diagnosis and the like.

Option 2 - take health care fully socialistic. Fluck it, Medicare for all. System would still be a hot mess, but at least there would be only one paperwork system to manage.

I personally think #1 will be far more efficient and effective if we could ever make the transition. But #2 is the only one that is even plausible to implement. The real issue is an awful lot of people and organizations are making a lot of money with the status quo at the expense of the consumer.
